David sat at his desk and stared at the silent satellite phone in his hand willing it to light up. He went to the window where the snow was swirling thickly in the air, obliterating any view of the sea not forty yards away.

He’d come in here minutes after Sarah’s helicopter took off to call Captain Truman and order him back to the compound, when he realized there wasn’t enough time for the pilot to go to Henredon after all. David and Boyle needed to start evacuating now.

His anxiety ratcheting up by the second, David turned back to his desk, the phone still in his hand. Boyle came into the room, his face creased with concern.

“Did you reach him?” Boyle said.

“Not Truman. The cloud cover must be blocking access to the satellite. But I spoke to Hennessy for about thirty seconds,” David said.

“Did you tell him to return to base?”

“There wasn’t time. Something was happening.”

“Something? Like what?”

“It sounded like they were…” David shook his head.

“Like they were what?” Boyle said impatiently.

David looked at him. “Crashing. It sounded like he was losing control and they were going down.”

Boyle stepped into the room. “Bugger. This is a right bollocks. They never should have taken off in this shite.”

David stared at the phone. “I can’t believe this,” he said in a hollow voice. “I can’t believe this is happening.”
